I. Basic Definitions for Preceptors

  • Preceptee: A preceptee is a student nurse (SN) who has completed the curriculum requirements except for the role transition course (NUR 300).
  • Preceptorship: A preceptorship is a planned educational program that allows the student nurse to transition to the registered nurse role at a gradual pace and in a supportive environment.
  • Clinical: The clinical focus of the course is the part of a course in which the student applies the nursing process to the care of a group of patients.

Ultimately, the preceptor (Staff RN) assists the preceptee (Student Nurse) to identify and learn the RN’s role responsibilities in the reality of the work setting

II. Roles and Responsibilities of Preceptees

Preceptee roles and responsibilities include:

  • assessing and monitoring own learning needs
  • communicating learning needs
  • planning activities to meet own needs
  • implementing these activities
  • evaluating own work
  • conducting self in a professional and mature manner
  • working closely with faculty and preceptor to ensure all course objectives have been met
  • using constructive criticism to enhance performance
  • adherence to all hospital or clinical facility policies and procedures
  • adherence to all College policies and procedures identified in the College Catalog and/or Student Handbook. Failure to exhibit integrity, ethical conduct, or professional standards may warrant dismissal from the College
  • collaborating with course faculty and their nurse preceptor concerning learning goals for this clinical experience
  • compliance with health and other professional requirements of the course facility prior to the start of the clinical experience
  • dressing in a professional manner consistent with course facility guideline and be clearly identified as a student
  • being prepared to work in the clinical setting in a safe manner that demonstrates professional standards and arrive at the agreed time
  • attending all established clinical days, or notify clinical nurse preceptor of absence and establish clinical make-up experience
  • performing in the presence of the nurse preceptor any skills or assessments identified by the preceptor or preceptee as requiring assistance including first time skills
  • demonstration of safe and comprehensive nursing care under the supervision of the nurse preceptor
  • completion of the required 100 hours of clinical experience by the outlined date in the course. Failure to complete this clinical time will result in course failure

Preceptee roles and responsibilities are accomplished by:

  • Participating in the classroom by attendance, advancing the assigned work of the group, active participation, and completion of assignments prior to class
  • Clarifying progress in the course with assigned preceptor and faculty
  • Communicating with faculty and preceptor learning needs and learning plans
  • Validating clinical progress via stated objectives at midterm and final
  • Successfully reaching a course score of 76% based on course faculty assignments, exams, attendance and HESI tests.

III. Roles, Responsibilities, and Rights of Preceptors

The primary roles for the preceptor include being a/an:

  • Role Model: by example and direct supervision of SN
  • Socializer: by helping the student to integrate into the work group on the unit
  • Educator: by assisting student in assessing learning experiences, implementing learning plans, and evaluating student performance.

Responsibilities include:

  • Orienting student to the clinical practice setting including identification of facility policies and procedures.
  • Assigning direct patient care activities to the student.
  • Supervising the student in the clinical practice setting.
  • Providing suggestions that will assist and improve student performance to achieve course and clinical outcomes.
  • Contacting course faculty concerning any issues that may arise.
  • Providing ongoing written documentation of student progress in meeting designated course outcomes for the purpose of evaluation.
  • Completing the formal evaluation of the student’s progress at the end of the clinical experience.

These roles are accomplished by:

  • working closely with the student, demonstrating and explaining their staff nursing role
  • allowing student to assume responsibilities at a mutual agreeably pace
  • serving as a resource person, sharing nursing expertise and knowledge with a student while working together as part of a healthcare team
  • demonstrating technical and managerial skills necessary to coordinate care for a group of patients
  • communicating freely the successes, suggested improvements, or problems related to the student’s clinical performance to the student and faculty
  • facilitating the student’s role transition by deferring assistive personnel to the student, as appropriate, so the student will develop management of care abilities.

IV. Roles and Responsibilities of Course Faculty

Course Faculty: An RN instructor employed by The Christ College of Nursing and Health Sciences who facilitates, monitors, and evaluates student’s learning as well as orients and supports the preceptor.

These roles are accomplished by:
  • assuring the preceptor is oriented to their role by providing the nurse preceptor with course syllabus, designated course outcomes, and directions on how to assist students in meeting these outcomes;
  • guiding students in their own development of specific clinical objectives;
  • evaluating students’ progress based on weekly discussions with student and preceptor;
  • problem-solving with student and preceptor if conflict arises;
  • conducting conferences to assist the student in correlating theory and clinical;
  • collaborating with preceptor in assisting the student to meet clinical course objectives;
  • being available to nurse preceptors to discuss any issues that may arise;
  • providing the student with the opportunity to evaluate the clinical experience;
  • discussing with nurse preceptor any information from student concerning ways to improve the clinical experience for future students;
  • participating regularly in communication between course faculty, nurse preceptor and student to discuss student’s progress and exchange ideas and/or suggestions to better achieve outcomes. These meetings will occur by telephone, chat room, in person, and/or e-mail exchanges.
Students/preceptors, work closely with their course faculty throughout the experience to ensure needs are being met related to learning objectives. Nurse preceptors serve as role models, mentors, and/or direct supervisors of students in the clinical area. Nurse preceptors do not replace course faculty, but work closely with course faculty in facilitating student success.
