The Christ College Writing Center assists students and faculty/staff with academic and professional papers and projects (writing assignments, resumes, speech outlines, etc.). The Writing Center consultant will work collaboratively with clients to empower them and help them better understand and use the writing process. At the end of a consultation session, clients should have acquired knowledge and skills that can be used on future papers and projects.
Every writer can benefit from the perspective of another; the Writing Center welcomes novice writers, sophisticated writers, and everyone in between. We look forward to working with you in the future!
Online Consultations: For an online consultation, the client will email their Word document attachment to the Writing Center consultant at least one half-hour before their scheduled appointment time. The client’s first and last name should be identified in the title of the document (example: Jane_Smith.doc), and the document must be received by the scheduled appointment time (or it will not be reviewed until another appointment is made). If the client’s document is a course assignment, the client should describe the assignment and their primary concerns about the assignment in their email to the consultant. An initial face-to-face appointment should be made for lengthy papers (of five pages or more). The consultant will virtually pose questions (using the Tracking Changes function in Word) in order to help the client think about how to address any concerns and revise accordingly. This feedback will be provided to the client within 24 hours of his/her appointment time. Click here for instructions on attaching a document to an email. When looking for an appointment, clients should keep in mind the due date of their paper or project. Ample time must be allowed for any necessary follow-up appointments and revisions. For this reason, it is recommended that clients schedule an appointment at least two weeks in advance of a course-related paper/project due date. Clients can schedule as many appointments as necessary but should not schedule back-to-back appointments. If an appointment must be cancelled, it should be cancelled AT LEAST 24 hours in advance.
As a result of both face-to-face and online consultations, clients will gain insight and practice that will help them write more effectively. Clients should not expect that the consultant will provide content or edit/proofread. If the consultant notices problematic patterns in grammar/punctuation while reviewing a paper/project, the client will be referred to the appropriate resources and provided with a corrective example pertaining to the pattern. The same policies will be applied with regard to citation styles. If clients are having difficulties with APA or MLA, the Writing Center consultant will orient them with the appropriate resources and provide a relevant example. The Writing Center consultant will not review references line-by-line (either in-text or in the References/Works Cited page).
It is also important to understand that course instructors will ultimately be responsible for assigning a letter grade to course-related papers/projects, so the consultant will not evaluate course-specific content or guarantee that students will earn a desired grade as a result of the session.
